Intex offers an inexpensive line of saltwater chlorinating systems. Some of them are even sold with a pump/filter assemblies attached so that you get everything you need at one time, in one piece of equipment. Intex SWG units are affordable, can make enough chlorine for large pool, and work quite well.
However, older Intex chlorinators do have some compromises that you should be aware of. For one thing, these older units are limited in their programming. All you can do is select how many hours the system should run. It will turn on and run for that number of hours, then start again exactly 24 hours later. You cannot specify a time for the unit to start and you are limited to one hour increments. The other, and perhaps biggest, drawback is that the system is reset entirely after a loss of power. The program you created is completely gone, and the system will not run again until you re-program it. So if you happen to be away from the pool for a while there’s a power outage, your pool will stop getting the steady dose of chlorine that keeps the water clean.
Fortunately, newer Intex saltwater generators have corrected some of these issues. They come with a programmable clock so that you can control the exact time of day that they run, no matter when you set the program. Additionally, they are better about retaining the program after a power outage.
All models of Intex chlorinators have an easy to use programming panel which also alerts you to various problems that may occur with the unit. These alarms include low salt level, low flow, and high salt level. Older units show a numerical code that you then must look up in the manual to see what the problem is. Newer models have LED’s that light up next to a description of the problem.
